Sewage Cleanup FAQ — Fresno
The questions Fresno homeowners ask us most, answered the same way we'd answer them at your door — including the ones about money, insurance, and who actually shows up.
How much does sewage cleanup cost in Fresno?
Published national guides put sewage cleanup at roughly $7–$15+ per square foot of affected area. A small single-room job typically runs $2,000–$3,000; large multi-room contamination $7,000–$15,000; and jobs including rebuild of floors and walls can exceed that. Your contractor's written quote after inspection is the real figure — the ranges on our cost page are planning numbers with their sources cited.
Does homeowners insurance cover a sewage backup?
Not under a standard policy. Sewer and drain backup is specifically excluded unless you purchased a water-backup endorsement, and flood (rising outdoor water) is excluded entirely. Sudden pipe failures are usually covered; gradual leaks usually are not. Our insurance guide walks through it, and every cleanup through this site includes documentation built for a claim file.
Can I clean up sewage myself?
You can handle truly minor, contained incidents on hard surfaces with gloves and disinfection. But sewage that has spread under flooring, into wall bases, carpet, or a crawl space cannot be cleaned properly with household equipment — the contamination and moisture stay where you can't reach them, and that's the part that causes the expensive second problem. Professional cleanup exists for exactly that hidden portion.
What should I do first when sewage backs up?
Keep people and pets out of the affected rooms, stop flushing and running water anywhere in the house, avoid electrical contact in standing water, and photograph everything from a dry doorway for insurance. The full ordered list is on our what-to-do page.
Can sewage-soaked carpet or furniture be saved?
Generally, no. Porous materials — carpet, pad, upholstery, mattresses, insulation — cannot be disinfected reliably after sewage contact, and professional standards call for their removal. Hard surfaces (tile, concrete, sealed fixtures) can be cleaned and disinfected. The contractor documents removed items for your insurance claim before disposal.
How long does a sewage cleanup take?
Extraction and removal are usually completed in the first visit or two. Structural drying typically runs several days with equipment in place and moisture checks, because closing up a still-damp structure invites mold. Rebuild — replacing removed flooring or drywall — is scheduled after drying is verified.
Who actually does the work?
An independent local restoration contractor. Before receiving referrals from this site, the contractor must pass our verification of an active California contractor license for the work and current liability insurance — and those details are provided to you in writing with your quote, before you approve any work. You pay the contractor, never this website.
Do you repair the sewer line itself?
No — cleanup and plumbing repair are different trades. The contractor cleans and dries the damage and documents the cause they find; repairing or replacing the lateral is a plumber's job. If the line isn't fixed, the backup will be back, and the contractor will tell you plainly if that's what the evidence shows.
What about the smell after cleanup?
Proper cleanup — removing contaminated porous material, disinfecting hard surfaces, and drying the structure — removes the source of the odor rather than masking it. A lingering sewer smell afterward usually means a hidden source: a crawl-space leak, a dry drain trap, or a line problem that still needs a plumber. Persistent odor is diagnostic information, not a fragrance problem.
I'm a renter. What should I do?
Protect your belongings and your health first: keep out of affected areas, document everything with photos, and notify your landlord or property manager immediately — sewage cleanup is the property owner's responsibility. If you need the cleanup documented for your own records or renters insurance, a request through this site produces a written scope you can share.
How fast can someone get here?
Requests are routed to the contractor as they arrive, with emergencies flagged first, and the contractor confirms timing when they contact you. We don't publish a guaranteed response time we can't control — what we can promise is that the form takes two minutes and starts the process immediately.
